The Influence of Social Capital on Depression through the Mediation of Cognitive Function among Older Adults: Focusing on the Moderated Mediation Effect of Community Environmental Satisfaction

Abstract
This study, taking interest in antecedent factors such as social capital(social relationship and social activity participation), cognitive function, and community environmental satisfaction among older adults, examined how these factors are related to older adults¡¯ depression. Using data from the 2020 National Survey of the Elderly, this study analyzed the responses of 9,885 older adults aged 65 and over who participated in the survey. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was partial mediation effect of cognitive function in the relationship between social capital and depression among older adults. Second, in the path of social capital on depression through the mediation of cognitive function, community environmental satisfaction moderated the relationship between cognitive function and depression among older adults. Third, the mediating effect of cognitive function increased as the level of community environmental satisfaction increased, indicating the moderated-mediating effect of community environmental satisfaction. Finally, this study insinuates that it is necessary to develop programs to promote active social relationship and social activity participation among older adults, and to expand social activity support systems, as well as to build age-friendly community environments that enable older adults to continue to live successfully and satisfactorily in their communities.
